ABB invests in scalable robots to enhance its range of user-friendly welding systems

ABB is entering into a strategic partnership with US startup Scalable Robotics, to enhance its portfolio of easy-to-use robotic welding systems. With 3D vision and an understanding of embedded processes, Scalable Robotics technology allows customers to easily program welding robots without the need for coding. ABB Technology Ventures (ATV), ABB’s venture capital unit, will be the lead investor in Scalable’s seed funding investment round. ABB did not disclose the level or terms of the investment.

The investment is another milestone in ABB’s ecosystem strategy for partners that provide easy-to-use solutions for a variety of applications and industries.

“Companies are looking to robotics to help build resilience and efficiency in the face of global challenges including labor shortages, disrupted supply chains, and uncertainty,” said Mark Segura, ABB’s Head of Robotics. “In the United States alone, it is estimated that there will be a shortage of 400,000 welders by 2024. To address this, we need to help adopt robots by providing easy-to-use, easy-to-program technology, allowing manufacturers to easily introduce automated solutions that can weld more parts In less time while reducing scrap and increasing quality.”

Scalable technology enhances ABB’s existing suite of no-code programming applications that help eliminate the need for specialized programming knowledge. The Scalable platform allows a worker to teach a task to the robot by indicating where the solder should be applied, with the robot learning the path on its own. The platform features a 3D camera in a protective box attached to the robotic arm end tools, and uses a touch screen interface to guide the welder through the inspection, teaching, validation and adjustment steps.

The welder teaches the robot the positions of the welds by clicking the hand pen to indicate the desired approach, path and welding starting points. The platform automatically creates a welding path that is validated within RobotStudio®, ABB’s leading simulation and programming software. The operator makes any final adjustments before the robot automatically adjusts the program and sends it to the robot’s console so that welding can be performed.
