But coal heaters present many challenges. You need to always stay on top of the temperature, and adjust the vents regularly to make sure everything is just right as the charcoal level in the smoker changes.

Barbie wanted to build a business that would give him the best of both worlds – the delicious flavor of charcoal with the ease and convenience of an electric or propane smoker. He developed a controller that monitors the temperature in the smoker and automatically adjusts the airflow over the charcoal to maintain the correct temperature at all times, allowing him to sit back and relax as he starts the perfect charcoal-based grill.

Robert Korn had already built a SUSE video controller using an Arduino and a handful of other components, with great success. He chose to apply the same model to a smoker and created the Smokerduino, which ensures meats are cooked to perfection every time with minimal effort from the chef.

Roger Theriault He and his wife enjoy making cheese and yogurt at home, but it’s a long process that involves a thermometer and a lot of waiting. To go a few steps further, he built his own smart thermometer that monitors the temperature of food and beeps when a certain temperature is reached and it’s time for the next step.

However, when the machine stopped working, Theriault decided to upgrade it rather than just fix it. The new iteration of the thermometer uses Alexa devices, too, enabling it to easily monitor and control everything in the kitchen or outside at the smoker.

The way it works is fairly simple – just give Alexa an instruction and it will find the recipe and instruct the specific device to start from the first step of that recipe. It also relies on the data from the recipe to monitor the temperature and make any necessary notifications or adjustments.
