Ingenuity and Sumitomo partner to bring the next generation of robots to Japanese warehouses

September 30, 2022 – TOKYO – Dexterity Corporation, innovators of fully capable robotics solutions, today announced a strategic partnership with Sumitomo Corporation to deploy 1,500 dexterity robots in warehouses across Japan.

Sumitomo Corporation, a Fortune 500 multinational corporation headquartered in Japan, has signed an exclusive distribution agreement in Japan with Dexterity to enter into the Robots as a Service (RaaS) business in Japanese warehouses. Prior to signing this distribution agreement, Sumitomo invested in Dexterity in 2020 through Presidio Ventures Inc. , the institutional venture capital arm of the US-based Sumitomo Corporation.

Using Dexterity’s SaaS-based robotic intelligence platform will help customers take advantage of full-task robots – standard industrial robot arms equipped with dexterity intelligence software that helps them solve the toughest jobs in warehouses. The full-stack robotic platform provides robots with machine-learning-enhanced capabilities to help them build multiple SKUs on the fly, assemble and direct messy streams of parcels and bags, as well as easily pick and pack damaged items such as bread and cake.

To date, Dexterity engineers have developed, tested, and supervised the installation of all of its robots, picking more than 40 million items into production in warehouses across the United States.

Working with Sumitomo will expand access to full mission robots in Japan and ensure that these systems will fit into existing Japanese warehouse workflows.

“The full-task robots that we have deployed have only increased the demand for flexible automation that can operate in existing workflows and infrastructure,” said Samir Menon, CEO of Ingenuity. “Partnering with Sumitomo will speed Dexterity customers on getting FTE robot systems up and running at their facilities.”

In addition to working with Dexterity to deploy the bots with Japanese customers, Sumitomo will also work with Dexterity to open a pilot facility in Japan. The facility will open in October 2022, and will show Japanese supply chain leaders how incoming and outgoing materials in the warehouse can be linked to smart robots.

Sumitomo plans to deploy its ingenious parcel uniqueness and induction solution with its first Japanese customer by the first quarter of 2023.

The announcement follows news that Dematic, one of the major providers of supply chain solutions, has partnered with Dexterity to expand deployments in North America and Europe.
