Unless you are a professional in metalworking, welding is usually a little intimidating. High voltages, bright flashes that can damage eyesight, hot sparks, and seemingly permanent errors can cause some shame or fear. But the payoff is worth it, as soldering can be a lot of fun.
The YesWelder MIG205DS Welding Machine promises an easy, beginner-friendly approach to the trade. Does he deliver? We ran a hands-on test with this device to find out. Keep reading to find out more in this YesWelder MIG205DS Welder review.

What is YesWelder MIG-205DS Welding Machine?
First, let’s start with a bit of backstory. I’m not completely new welding. I took some metal shop courses in high school, and did reasonably well. But that was 20 years ago, and my metalworking experience since those glorious days, lacks that. So while I’m not entirely new to it, I’m a complete novice welder. When I had the chance to try the YesWelder MIG-205DS, I couldn’t miss it.
The MIG-205DS Welding Machine from YesWelder is an affordable and easy-to-use welding machine. This machine is a three-in-one tool capable of metallic inert gas (MIG), inert tungsten gas (TIG) and simple arc welding. It’s designed to run on 110V electricity as well as 220V electricity, meaning any shop with an outlet can run this machine.
Although the weight of the machine is less than 35 pounds, this welding machine uses a special inverter technology to provide enough power for welding. It has a digital display with push-button adjustments to choose between welding types, wire feed speed, and more. There are also automatic settings that adjust the speed and voltage relative to the amperage setting, as well as fully customizable values for experienced welders (I stuck with the automatic ones).
MIG-205DS is a MIG welding machine at the core, which is capable of MIG welding without gas or gas. It also comes with everything necessary to get started with MIG welding (other than wires), such as a MIG gun, gas hose (for gas welding), contact tips for different wire types, and ground or ground clamp. Comes with an electrode clip for stick welding as well. Anything required for TIG welding would be an extra purchase, although the machine is quite capable on its own. Also, this welder does not come with a mask or gloves.
How easy is it to set up the YesWelder MIG-205DS welder?
I don’t have much experience setting up welders so my review of the setup is definitely subjective. But, I will say the setup was really frustration free. YesWelder intentionally markets welders to DIYers, and as such, it recognizes that many of its clients are first-time welders. The main benefit of this I’ve found is that the setup instructions provided by the company are quite clear.
In the end, setting up the welder only took a few minutes of reading and then a few more minutes of assembly. The soldering came fully assembled but I had to attach the gun, some electrical fixtures and ground clamps and load it with wires. I also had to choose the correct terminal size for the wire I was using (.035 flux core, in my case). This all took about 30 minutes, and I was ready to start crunching the metal pieces together.
Is the YesWelder MIG-205DS welding machine easy to use?
In my opinion, where the YesWelder MIG-205DS welder really shines is in its ease of use. My plan was to weld the brackets to one of my trailers so I could attach removable walls, and the MIG-205DS made the job very easy, even for someone with limited welding experience.
First, I needed an idea of the thickness of the metal I was welding. Experienced metal workers and welders can do this by touch, but in my case, I needed to do some research and then some guesswork. Once I had a reasonable idea of the thickness of the metal, I was able to set the MIG-205DS welder to the appropriate current and let it do the rest of the work.
In fact, welding with the MIG-205DS was easy. The cannon fed the wire smoothly and steadily, and the ground clamp had plenty of tension to create strong ground connections. With the clip and gun being 10 feet long, it was easy to maneuver between the sides of the trailer. However, I had to spin the trailer between the rear and front weld.
How well is the YesWelder MIG-205DS welding machine designed?
I really enjoy designing the MIG-205DS. Whatever inverter technology YesWelder uses (which is beyond my technical knowledge) allows this factor to be much smaller than a conventional welder. It’s light and compact, so it’s easy to stow away on a store shelf or under a workbench.
However, there is some give and take to this design. One of the first things I noticed was that the spool setup had mostly plastic parts. It’s been a while since I loaded welding wire into a larger Lincoln or Miller welder, but I don’t think these brands use plastic spool parts. However, I don’t think this is a downside to the average DIYer. Even welding once or twice a week, the MIG-205DS will not see even a fraction of the use that a welder in a production shop would experience. The plastic looks like it’s high quality, and I would imagine it will last the whole life of the soldering.
Also, the average DIYer does not usually have Electricity 220 volts in their garage, which may really limit the kind of metalwork they can do. YesWelder’s inverter allows it to run on 110V or 220V, which is something I really appreciate about its design. Although it may not provide the high voltage welder penetration type, it is great for small repairs around the shop, some auto work, and metalworking hobbies.
Is the YesWelder MIG-205DS welding machine worth the money?
I can honestly say that the answer to the question “Is the product worth the money?” The question is not always easy. I have to weigh the cost of the product against its competitors, how easy it actually is to use it, and how often someone would normally use it. In the case of the YesWelder MIG-205DS welding machine, the answer to the final question is “Yes!”
First, when I compare its price to other welders of similar capabilities, the MIG-205DS is more affordable. Second, although my welds weren’t pretty, the machine is incredibly easy to use and doesn’t scare you at all once you’ve worked with it. Finally, paying someone to weld something isn’t cheap, so even if I were to use this welding machine once or twice a year, it would pay for itself over and over again.
But, having said that, I doubt this welder will hold up more than a similar model from Miller or Lincoln. There are some plastic parts, and YesWelder is relatively new to the welding industry compared to those of the well-established companies. Therefore, if you plan to use this welding machine several times each week, it may be worth investing in Professional tool.
For anyone else who prefers a tool that takes some of the intimidation out of welding, the YesWelder MIG-205DS welder can be the way to go. That was for me.
