Ithaca High School’s Robotics Team Starts Fresh Season | Ithaca

Code Red Robotics of Ithaca High School is ready to start a new school year! As part of the World First Robotics Teams (for inspiration and recognition of science and technology), you build robots and participate in competitions. Members of the Code Red team build a 125-pound robot over the course of two months each school year following that year’s theme and competition challenges.

Before “Building Season” begins, new members are greeted and ready to work together to make Robot of the Year a success. Along the way, students build critical thinking skills and long-term relationships with peers, advisors, and mentors—local STEM professionals who provide important insight to the team.

This year Code Red welcomed 49 new members to our team, bringing our membership to 85. On October 22nd, several of them, along with returning members and mentors, attended Ra Cha Cha Ruckus. Hosted by Team FIRST 1511, also known as Rolling Thunder, Ruckus is a small competition featuring last year’s robots. This contest allows new members to learn how FIRST works and get a chance to see bots and team members in action.

“Ruckus was a really fun experience,” said Maria Sun, a freshman on the team this year. season.”

Code Red also kicked off the year with volunteering and community outreach activities. On September 18th, our team brought last year’s robot to Streets alive! In Ithaca, Bikewalk hosted by Tompkins. We gave demonstrations of how the robot works and were able to show our love of STEM to many members of the community. According to an anonymous parent who attended the event,[Our son] He asked about seeing the “robot made by the kids in red shirts” since he saw you all on the last streets alive! He was so glad you all came out.”

On October 11, team members at Stewart Park volunteered to help Friends of Stewart Park pick up trash, trim invasive plants, and clean up the playground to keep our local park clean and a fun place for everyone. “It was a really fulfilling experience and a lot of work, but I’m glad I was able to do my part!” says Connie Zing, one of the volunteers during the event. She is looking forward to more opportunities like this next season.

After last spring’s election, Code Red is led by seven officers: Emerson Shriver, the president; Annalize Thompson and Wali Alfridi, Vice Presidents/Managers, Build Team; Alex Elia, Community Outreach, Celine Sahu, Treasurer; Shane Wei, Team Manager; and Jennifer Gao, Public Relations Officer. As a student club, the Officers are expecting a great year.

The FIRST Code Red Robotics team would like to continue to thank their sponsors; Rheonix, BorgWarner Morse TEC, BAE Systems, Cornell Institute for Computational Sustainability, Cornell Powers College of Computing and Information Sciences, Cornell College of Engineering, Datapoint Laboratories, Duthie Orthodontics, Elwyn & Palmer Consulting Engineers, PLLC, Incodema, Tompkins Trust Company, Vector Magnetism, M&T Bank, ICSD, ICSD Board of Education, Ithaca High School, and IPEI.
