Lamar University offers a modern, cost-effective, software-focused graduate engineering experience

Digitization has become the new buzzword of this decade. With new concepts such as digital transformation, Industry 4.0, and smart manufacturing, engineering students are expected to adapt from the outset and respond to the needs of their industry and the world.

Lamar University (LU) College of Engineering (COE) Prepares students for the future with our modern, cost-effective, program-focused graduate programs. A wide range of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees are offered, covering civil, mechanical, industrial, electrical, and chemical engineering. It is ideal for students who are focused on the future with their hearts set on thriving in a world where there is an accelerating adoption of current and frontier technologies and digital-native business models.

The college teaches software to implement the ideas presented in its courses. The Department of Mechanical Engineering teaches SOLIDWORKS, ANSYS, MATLAB, and Fluent. The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering teaches Python, JavaScript, SQL, Rockwell RSLogix, R, SAP, and Autodesk Fusion 360 to allow students to create software for systems change. In the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CHBE), students learn about Aspen. Meanwhile, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) teaches Python, R, and GIS. The Electrical Engineering department teaches a wide range of software and hardware including MATLAB, Simulink, LabVolt DAI, SimPower, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, FPGA, CPU Simulator, Logisim as well as general purpose programming languages (Python, Java, C/C++) .

Both theoretical and practical skills are emphasized to better prepare students for the job market. “We are constantly modernizing and updating the curriculum in our degree programs to deliver unprecedented value to our students and to prepare our graduates for successful careers of their choice,” says Dr. Brian Craig, Dean of Engineering. “We provide students with a variety of up-to-date tools and skills they need to enter the job market in readiness for employment.”

Tuition fees and living costs are low, allowing students to focus on their programs with the goal of equipping them to lead digital transformation projects in their future careers.

According to Venkatesh Udamiri, Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering, his department “has a unique focus on civil engineering informatics and has developed several innovative courses that offer practical, project-based training in open source Python, R, and GIS skills using real big data for global civil engineering.” “.

Emphasis is placed on holistic thinking and analysis of civil engineering systems keeping in mind the needs of the industry. In addition to technical skills, students are also trained in soft skills such as project management principles, project life cycle assessment, and scrum practices, as well as oral and written skills to be proficient in Data Science and Programming with a Civic Focus,” Uddameri.

In the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, PhD students like Pooyan Mobtahej prepare to pass job interviews that often require complex tests of software and modeling skills. “The department has a unique environment for international students due to its wide range of courses related to Data Science and Machine Learning such as Programming, UI Design, Reliability and much more,” he says. Through these courses, Mobtahej was prepared for the technical interviews that helped him pass the exams and get an internship in

For electrical engineering students, they learn analog and digital electronic devices and circuits, analog and wireless communication systems, control and instruments, power and energy, signal processing, photonics and optics, electromagnetics, and computer engineering. Along the way, they acquire skills in designing, programming, building, and testing electrical and electronic equipment, devices, and systems as well.

Courses in robotics and automation span various disciplines, enriching students with complementary skills that will set them apart from their peers. This is led by Dr. Mansour Karkoub, Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, who is developing a multi-course sequence to prepare students for robotics and automation careers, drawing on coursework from multiple departments.

What sets engineering programs apart here is the approach – the lessons are hands-on and conducted in cutting-edge laboratories equipped with the latest technology. The college has several advanced automation and robotics labs including the Emerson Advanced Technology Center which is used by all departments. The college also has a Flowserve Learning Resource Center with a wide range of industrial pumps and control systems.

Moreover, the college is also a pioneer in sensor technology. The university is actively working on using this technology. CEE is operating more than 70 water level sensors to model its watersheds, predict and prevent flooding during hurricanes and other rain events as part of a multimillion-dollar grant. Another example involves using sensor data to detect when industrial compressors will fail and to identify dangerous debris in waterways.

Lamar Engineering is ranked #3 in 2021 in terms of return on investment as ranked by Payscale.com. LU is consistently ranked highly in this survey due to the low cost and high career achievement of our graduates. Graduates from the School of Engineering get their feet on the right path to career success.
