Over 3,000 young adults have joined the 2022/23 Mission Space Lab at Astro Pi Mission Space Lab 2022/23 @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi «Adafruit Industries – Makers, Hackers, Artists, Designers & Engineers!

This year, more than 3,000 young engineers submitted designs to the European Astro Pi Challenge. Here’s more Raspberry Pi Foundation:

The Mission Space Lab is part of the European Astro Pi Challenge, an ESA educational program run in collaboration with us at the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Mission Space Lab teams can choose between “Life on Earth” and “Life in space” for their experiment idea. As in previous years, “Life on Earth” was the most popular topic for experimentation: three-quarters of the teams chose to submit an idea with that topic for experiments using one of Astro Pi’s high-quality cameras. Half of these experiments involved using a sensitive near-infrared camera to investigate topics such as deforestation. Across both topics, over 40% of teams expressed interest in using machine learning in their experience.

A panel of 25 judges from the Raspberry Pi Foundation and ESA Education evaluated the ideas submitted. We are limited in the number of teams we can accommodate, as time to conduct experiments aboard the International Space Station is limited, especially for “life on Earth” experiments that need time in the nadir window. The level of ideas submitted was higher than ever before, making this the toughest ruling yet. We are excited to announce that the 486 teams will be moving into the second phase of the Spacelab for the mission: writing the code for their experiments.
