Since the launch of the first collaborative robot (cobot) in 2008, Universal Robots has grown to become a global market leader in cobots with offices in more than 20 countries around the world. The company’s success is reflected in the growth of a whole range of robotics, which means that Denmark is now home to more than 400 robotics companies, making the Danish city of Odense one of the world’s leading robotics hubs.
Kim Povelsen, President of Universal Robots, comments: “This is a historic achievement for us, and we are proud of the way we have evolved from being a homegrown basement startup under the university to becoming a world leader in cobot and market leader. Above it all demonstrates However, we have a great product and many companies around the world can see the benefits of using our robots to grow their businesses.”
Universal Robots started in 2005, when three young researchers—Esben Østergaard, Kasper Støy and Kristian Kassow—from the University of Southern Denmark became frustrated with how heavy, expensive and complex robots at the time were. This gave them the idea of creating a bot that was flexible, safe to work with, and easier to install and program.
Since then, Universal Robots has developed a range of cobot products, the most recent of which is the addition The new UR20 to its portfolio, selling more than 50,000 kobots worldwide.
As Universal Robots has boomed, so has the Danish robotics scene, centered around Odense, a city of 200,000. The number of people employed by Danish robotics companies is expected to reach 23,000 by 2025, while total revenue from the industry is already more than $2.79 billion.
Over the past year, Universal Robots has employed more than 200 employees to ensure the company is prepared for the tremendous growth potential that lies ahead.
“From the outside, there is, of course, a great deal of focus on product and technology,” says Povelsen. “But technology doesn’t arise on its own. It’s about having the right people on board, and at UR we have some exceptionally skilled and creative employees who are able to push the boundaries of What can be automated and how easy it is to do.If people 10 years ago could have seen what cobots can do today, they would have been amazed.Looking forward, it should be in another 10 years.Facilitating solving the most complex automation tasks is A very motivating goal.”
The UR President anticipates the growing need for automation in the coming years, driven by several different things: the desire to protect employees from dangerous and monotonous tasks; relocation, where companies move closer to production in response to an uncertain world; Above all, a labor shortage that will only get worse in the coming years:
“We have a new generation of cobots on the way, with the UR20 being the first model, and our numbers show we’ve only reached approximately 2% of all potential customers worldwide. So the potential is huge and as we celebrate the journey we’ve been on today, our eyes fixed on the future.”
