DIY Pigs in Blankets for Christmas has hit supermarket shelves thanks to a deal between Wales’ most famous butcher and Tesco.

The succulent mix of sausages wrapped in veiny bacon is a highlight of a festive feast and now it’s never been easier to make your own.

Edwards, Conwy’s Welsh butcher, has come up with an easy-to-assemble batch of ten high-quality, flavorful pork sausages and ten slices of bacon — and the marriage of the two is made in heaven, according to the company’s founder and president, Ewan Edwards.

He even offered video tutorials on how to make them, and 7,000 packages of the delicious treat will be on Tesco supermarket shelves across Wales and the Border Counties this Christmas.

Ewan Edwards explained: “Having a butcher ready to cook pigs in blankets is very labour-intensive, but it’s great to get everyone involved in preparing Christmas dinner.

So we came up with this series of ten do-it-yourself cocktail sausages and ten strips of bacon.

Fun to put together—all you need are scissors to cut the string of sausages, wrap them in bacon strips, put them side down on a roasting pan and pop them in the oven for perfect pigs in blankets.

Exclusive to Tesco, they are delicious, made with high quality ingredients, and easy to assemble and cook.

“It’s about making food fun and involving everyone because the younger members of the family can help.”

The sausages are made from premium pork, and the bacon is all Red Tractor guaranteed gluten-free and was created by Director of Product Development Natalie Bestwick and her team at Edwards the Welsh Butcher.

She said: “Our customers love to be creative, especially as part of Christmas, but convenience and ease of use are still key.

“For the business, making swine in blankets is labor intensive and demand is outpacing production capacity, but we believe we have spotted a gap in the market.

“We wanted to put together a simple solution to target these issues and like the rest of our range, it had to have the distinct Edwards flavor and quality our brand is known for.

“As a growing company with a newly expanded production facility, we can be fully reactive and bring solutions to market quickly, which in this case we have been able to offer to one of our largest customers, Tesco.

“Complementing your pig-in-blankets wrap ensemble are our Great Taste award-winning Honey and Rosemary Pork Chipolatas wrapped in Oak Smoked Streaky Bacon that we sell year-round through online retailer Ocado.”

The company’s founder, Ieuan Edwards, got his start in 1983 on Conwy High Street, where the company still has a shop in addition to its headquarters just outside the city.

Since 2004 their products have been stocked by all major supermarkets in Wales and increasingly in England as well whilst the original Butcher Shop has been crowned Best Butchers Shop in the UK and three times won Best Butchers Shop in Wales.
